Potty training

Okay, so I'm ready to start potty training Kaylie, finally. Ashleigh's days are going better, so I think I can try to concentrate more on Kaylie now. Maybe.

I've done this before too, with my daycare children. But it's been a while, and I think this could be different. It will be different, I know that.

So any tips from you moms out there that have done this already?

Have you heard of the "potty training in a day" idea? I'm not the type to say it's for everyone, or every child, but it worked well with my girls...I didn't really try it for Sawyer, but I don't think it would have worked as well for him. I really liked it, because it seemed much easier than stringing the whole thing out for a while. By the way, it worked pretty well for one of them in a day, the other one it took a couple days, tho' she had the main idea in a day. A few weeks later, I didn't worry about her anymore. (Not that there weren't ever accidents when she was having too much fun...) Anyway, I'll be glad to tell you more if you want...just email me! :-)

No advice, but maybe I'll be the one asking for it this fall! Anna already will let me know sometimes if she needs a diaper change, but I don't want to mess with it till after baby's been here for a couple of months and is well adjusted. By the way, cute pictures of your youngest!

Thanks, Elaine. I agree with waiting until the new baby is here to start p-t with Anna. That's exactly why I finally gave up the idea of p-t Kaylie until she was better adjusted after Ashleigh was born. Now I think I'm closer to ready. I tell ya, diapers and wipes for two is expensive!!!!!!!!!
I told Vernon I am in indecision as to go ahead and train Kaylie in the next few months, or whether I should wait until we're back from vacation in June. hm.......I'd rather have her in diapers when we travel so we're not potty-breaking so much, though I could take her potty along. But......I kinda want to start her now, too.

My advice is not to push it too early. When they are ready, it goes SO much easier. If she is truly showing an interest, that's great. Otherwise, you are in for a lot of extra laundry and frustration. My third child is pretty much trained. He was three in December. Soon after his birthday, he seemed very ready. In fact he went and sat on the potty himself and just went! We then incorporated a manila folder for him to put stickers in. One stick for #1 and 2 stickers if he went #2. He's been doing great!

I agree with Heidi. With my oldest, I messed and messed and messed....and then I got smart. I waited until I knew without a shadow of doubt that he and the rest that followed were ready...telling me and all that stuff, took the diaper away one morning and it was basically over. They all fussed for the diaper but of course I refused and they went in the commode. They were 3 or so and we didn't have to use a potty chair.

I'm definitely all for the "cold turkey" approach, as I call it. None of this half way stuff. Make training the focus of one intense weekend, put panties on her and go for it. Make it as fun and interesting as possible. It really doesn't have to be a trial and stressor. Truthfully, though, it is hard work to train a child (this included). Blessings as you begin! (I'd say go for it now and not wait until June) Angela H.
